Why Most Resumes Get Tossed — Even If You're Qualified

Hiring managers in biotech, life sciences, and medical devices don’t have time to guess what you’ve done. If your resume isn’t clear, specific, and results-driven, you’re invisible — no matter how strong your background is.

At my recruiting firm, we review thousands of resumes. Here are the most common mistakes we see that instantly get candidates passed over:

  • No context about the company.
You list your role at “Biodesix,” but don’t explain what the company does. That’s a problem. Hiring teams don’t want to leave your resume to go look it up. A simple line like this fixes it:

Biodesix is a diagnostics company specializing in blood-based tests for lung disease and cancer.

  • No explanation of your role.
Too many people list their title, like Account Executive, but never explain what they do. You need a 1–2 sentence summary that describes your focus.

For example:
Account Executive — My primary focus is winning new business for our MRD oncology testing. I cover the entire state of Florida.

This gives hiring managers immediate clarity. Then, and only then, use bullet points to show results:

      • President’s Club 2025 (Top 5% of sales force)
      • Ranked #4 out of 200 nationwide in 2021

  • Date ranges without months.
Listing “2004–2005” could mean two years — or just December to January. Always include month and year to avoid confusion or mistrust.

Correct:
January 2004 – December 2005

Wrong:
2004 – 2005

If any of that sounds familiar, your resume probably isn’t doing you justice.

That’s precisely why I created ResumeCreator.ai — a tool built for people in medical devices, life sciences, and biotech. It guides you step by step to:

  • Clearly explain what your company does
  • Properly describe your current role
  • Use specific timelines
  • Show measurable results
  • Format it all the right way — based on what hiring managers look for

Whether starting from scratch or uploading an existing resume to clean up, it only takes 10–15 minutes.
